May 4, 2009
Thursday evening, April 30, 2009, UNCW Police were notified of a bomb threat left in a women’s restroom in Randall Library. The threat was directed at the May 9 commencement ceremonies.
UNCW Police contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Wilmington Police and the New Hanover County Sheriff's office. The FBI also was contacted, and together, these various law enforcement agencies are conducting an ongoing investigation and risk assessment. The threat does not appear to be credible.
Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, extra security measures will be taken at Commencement ceremonies, including conducting purse and bag searches and using metal detectors. Because large-sized bags, including camera bags, will not be permitted into the graduation ceremonies, faculty, staff, students and family members should leave them at home or in their vehicles. In addition, starting May 8, there will be restricted access to offices located in Trask Coliseum and Hanover Hall. Since these security measures may result in delayed entrance, please plan to arrive early.
Graduating students should plan to arrive at Hanover Hall early and access the building at it's main entrance near "A" Lot, which is located adjacent to Hoggard Hall. However, since "A" Lot will be closed to parking, you should plan to park in an alternate parking lot such as "K" Lot (on the south side of Trask Coliseum), "E" Lot (near the Fisher Student Center) or "M" Lot (near the Fisher Field House) during commencement ceremonies. Faculty and staff who are participating in the ceremonies should enter the building at the loading dock, which is the entrance closest to the southeast corner of Trask Coliseum.
Anyone with information about the bom threat should contact UNCW police at 910-962-2222 or anonymously from www.uncw.edu/police or 910-962-TIPS.
