Dr. Hosier thanked everyone who came to welcome our chancellor-elect last Friday. Dr. DePaolo was very well received and we look forward to her permanent arrival. He gave congratulations to Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital on her new position as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Planning for K-12 at the Office of the President.
Dr. Dragna gave a brief report on the values implicit in a university learning community. One feature is an emphasis on measuring learning success through student learning outcomes, as opposed to characteristics and qualifications of entering students. He will present a complete report in the fall to assist the Council in determining the extent to which UNCW should adopt learning community principles in planning and in its culture.
Dr. Spackman presented the recommendation of the Planning Coordinators for adoption of twenty-one university-wide goals. The goals have been written to support the Board of Governors' Strategic Directions, and to serve as an umbrella to encompass the goals and operations of all UNCW's divisions. Dr. Schmid suggested some perfecting amendments that were agreed to by unanimous consent. Mr. Fry pointed out that the planning process is designed to facilitate collaboration among divisions and units. After extended discussion, the following motion carried:
The University Planning and Quality Council approves the university-wide goals as amended and authorizes their use in development of UNCW's Strategic Plan 2004-2009.
