WCE Alumnus Honored as Onslow County Teacher of the Year

Tuesday, September 05, 2017

Nicole Martin ‘13M has been selected as Onslow County Schools’ 2017-18 Teacher of the Year. The award was presented by district administrators and school board members during a surprise visit to Martin’s classroom on Sept. 13.

Martin earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Science Education from the Watson College in 2013. She has just entered her fifth year of teaching biology and AP environmental science at Northside High School.

Deputy Superintendent Beth Folger described Martin as a “creative thinker, marvelous teacher, advocate for public education and students and super hero” and Superintendent Rick Stout offered congratulations on a job well done in moments captured on a video posted on the school district website.

Thirty-six top teachers from the district were considered for the award. The selection process included a portfolio review, interviews and classroom observations.

Dennis Kubasko, associate professor of secondary science education at the Watson College, said WCE’s secondary faculty members were thrilled to see Martin receive the district’s top honor.

“We are so very happy to see that Nicole Martin is already being recognized by Onslow County for her impact on teaching children high school science,” Kubasko said. “As an MAT teacher candidate, she was recognized as student teacher of the year in 2013 by the North Carolina Science Teachers Association. Nicole was an innovative yet tenacious student in her pursuit of the pedagogical application of her content knowledge and she had amazing success with her students. The Watson College celebrates with her the success she is experiencing as an emerging educator in her discipline.”

As district Teacher of the Year, Martin will represent Onslow County in the regional competition for North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
