UNCW, NHCS Hold Public Forums on Proposed Lab School

Wednesday, September 13, 2017

On Aug. 31, UNCW and New Hanover County Schools announced community forums to discuss and gather input about a proposed laboratory school at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy. If approved, the lab school is expected to open at the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

At community forums held on Sept. 6 and 21, Donyell Roseboro, associate dean of Teacher Education and Outreach at UNCW’s Watson College of Education, explained the legislation behind the proposed lab school, invited questions and concerns and asked participants “to ‘dream big’ as we collectively envision how we might enrich the lives of young people who attend D.C. Virgo.”

Roseboro is partnering with Watson College dean Van Dempsey and New Hanover County Schools superintendent Tim Markley to lead a core design team charged with lab school planning.

“The lab school initiative presents an excellent opportunity for collaboration among the D.C. Virgo community, the New Hanover County Schools and UNCW,” Dempsey said.

“The educators involved in the planning of the lab school are focused on partnering with the community to create a school that will – as its primary mission – provide a rich educational context that creates opportunities for children,” he said. “We believe an outstanding lab school can be built on the foundation that exists at D.C. Virgo, and we already see the promise of a great partnership. The art of the possible for children, educators and the community inspires us.”

Community members are encouraged to attend lab school forums to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback and ideas. Forum events will be held Oct. 19 and Nov. 8 from 5:30-7 p.m. at D.C. Virgo, 183 Nixon Street in Wilmington.

Community members are also invited to complete a Lab School Survey and visit the Lab School website for additional information.
