CESTEM Hosts Regional SeaPerch Competition

Thursday, January 05, 2017

UNCW's Center for Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CESTEM) hosted the 2017 Regional SeaPerch Competition, held at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness Center in Brunswick County on January 21.

Fifty teams of middle and high school students from Southeastern North Carolina, Charlotte and the Pembroke region participated in the event.

SeaPerch is a national program, designed to engage students in an authentic STEM design project to build, modify and operate an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV students build is a simple version of real world ROVs used for military, commercial and scientific needs. As students design and construct their ROV, they learn and practice skills such as soldering, wiring, teamwork and prototype testing. After the initial build students must re-design their ROV to complete a series of complex tasks such as manipulating and retrieving objects, and navigating obstacles at depths up to 20 feet underwater.

SeaPerch teachers and students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to careers possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean and marine engineering. The competition is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and managed by the AUVSI Foundation.

CESTEM interim director Christopher Gordon coordinated the regional competition. This is the third year CESTEM has hosted the regional event and the first year UNC Charlotte’s Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education has participated with SeaPerch teams from the Charlotte region.

Winning teams receive medals and certificates and some qualify to advance to the National SeaPerch Competition.

Video and photos of the competition can be viewed on CESTEM’s Facebook page.
