ELCs Transition to UNCW with Yoga, Bubble Soccer and Student Tutoring

Wednesday, November 02, 2016

Students in WCE’s Education Learning Community have had a great beginning to their freshman year at UNCW. Fall activities included completing a low ropes challenge course and a yoga class at the UNCW recreation center.

“The yoga class was a way to promote wellness and help introduce students to the rec center,” said WSL coordinator LeAnne Smith. “Most of the students had never done this type of meditation and relaxation. The activity also models that we have to be conscious about taking time to take care of ourselves. I love it.”

Melissa Newcity, administrative associate in WCE’s Office of Student Advising and Integrated Leadership, arranged an afternoon of bubble soccer for WCE’s ELCs and their Watson Student Leader mentors in October. The event took place on the UNCW rec fields with equipment and a referee provided by Wilmington Bubble Soccer.

“Enclosed in giant plastic bubbles, the students laughed and played soccer against each other because what could be more bonding than colliding into each other like ping pong balls?” Newcity said. “The ELCs agreed that this was one of their favorite events so far in the school year and we plan on hosting this activity again next fall.”

Several ELCs are also tutoring students in the community through outreach efforts coordinated through the Interfaith Refugee Ministry and the new Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW).

The ELC was created in 2014 to provide first-year education majors a residential learning community that supports academic, social and educational development. Through the ELC, students have the opportunity to live with other pre-education majors, connect with Watson faculty and staff, attend seminars and participate in education field experiences prior to being admitted into the Watson College of Education.

The ELC program is coordinated by LeAnne Smith, director of WCE’s Office of Student Advising and Integrated Leadership. For more information, visit uncw.edu/ed/elc.
