WCE Alumnus Honored as Teacher of the Year

Wednesday, April 06, 2016

Amanda Hallman ’06 has been selected as Savannah-Chatham County Schools’ 2017 Teacher of the Year. The award was announced at a gala event on Feb. 11, honoring top educators in the district.

Hallman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the Watson College in 2006. She currently teaches math, science, social studies, health and fifth grade inclusion at West Chatham Elementary School in Savannah, GA.

The Teacher of the Year is announced a year in advance because the district’s selection process is so rigorous and time-consuming, according to a story published in Savannah Morning News on Feb. 12.

“Fifty-five top teachers from every local public school were considered for the honor. They wrote essays, endured classroom visits and panel interviews with committees of educators, community leaders and former Teachers of the Year,” the article said.

Ginger Rhodes, associate professor of mathematics and statistics and secondary MAT program coordinator at the Watson College, was pleased to see Hallman receive the district’s top honor.

“Mrs. Hallman is a creative, thoughtful and inspiring teacher,” Rhodes said. “She is adored by her students and respected by her colleagues. She deserves the recognition and the Seahawk community is very proud of her accomplishments!”

As district Teacher of the Year, Hallman will lead the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Professional Senate for Savannah-Chatham educators, serve as an ambassador to local schools, take part in school board meetings and represent the district at various events in the area. She is being considered for the state-level Teacher of the Year award.
