Andrew J. Ryder

Andrew J. Ryder joins the Watson College after serving as a research scientist at the Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE) at Iowa State University. Andy earned both his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in higher education from ISU and his B.A. in history and government from the College of William & Mary. His dissertation studying Iowa GED students’ pathways to community college completion earned the 2012 Dissertation of the Year Award from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC). Andy’s research and scholarly interests include access to postsecondary education for academically at-risk students, how colleges promote students’ development of personal and social responsibility, and the history and philosophy of student affairs practice.  Andy has twelve years of professional experience in the field of student affairs, and has authored several chapters for the New Directions sourcebooks for higher education and institutional research. Andy is a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoys running and triathlon.
