Public Speaker Series: Writer and Educator Dr. Lisa Delpit

Dr. Lisa DelpitOn October 15, the Watson College of Education will begin our 2ndannual Public Speaker Series with an event entitled, “Unsilencing The Dialogue, Embracing the Needs of Diverse Students” featuring Dr. Lisa Delpit.  Dr. Delpit is a dynamic speaker, whose work on school-community relations, cross-cultural communication and the education of children of color is widely acclaimed.  Perhaps best known for her award winning first book, Other People’s Children, Dr. Delpit received a MacArthur “Genius” Award in 1990.  She is currently the Felton G. Clark Professor of Education at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

The Public Speaker event is free to all students, faculty, staff and community members.  A reception in Dr. Delpit’s honor will be held in the Fisher Student Center at 4:30 pm, and the main event  will begin at 5:30 in UNCW’s Lumina Theater.

On Wednesday, October 16 Dr. Delpit will be available for Open Discussion with faculty (10 – 11 am) and students (11 am – noon) in EB-337.  See the Public Speaker Series website for more details.
