Important Security Update: Java 8 available 4/25/16 – mandatory after 5/9/16 for PCs

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

What: There are applications and websites that will not work unless you have Java installed.

Why: To ensure the safety and security of campus computers and data. Not upgrading leaves systems more vulnerable to hackers, viruses and other security concerns.

Please note: University Police and HVAC machines will not be updated due to the specific systems with which they interact.

When: This update will be available, beginning on April 25, as an optional install for University-owned, Windows-based PCs (does not apply to Macs) but will become mandatory on May 9th for faculty and staff. The install will NOT require a restart of your computer.

How: We recommend you close all web browsers (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) before installing.

To install, go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft System Center 2012 > Configuration Manager > Software Center. Select “Java 8” then click INSTALL SELECTED.

ITS also recommends you install the upgrade manually, before May 9th so that you can choose the time that is the most convenient for you. If you do not, this upgrade will install automatically on your computer the evening of May 9th for faculty and staff.

If you have any questions or issues about this upgrade, please contact the Technology Assistance Center (TAC) at 910-962-3805 or
