New and Noteworthy

December Maintenance Window

With the fall semester concluding, ITS is preparing to implement several projects which will impact the campus.

Starting the week of December 13th, ITS is updating UNCW’s records to point to a new domain name service (DNS) system.  DNS is the service that correlates website names to their IP addresses, and this new deployment will afford us a more robust solution while bringing us in line with a best-practice design.  The new system will run in parallel to prevent a loss of service to campus and Internet resources.  ITS will monitor traffic on the older system and work with the campus to update any static records on computers and other devices. There is no anticipated downtime with this migration.

On Monday, December 14th at 5:00 PM, the BlackBoard learning management system will be taken offline for its annual upgrade.  This planned maintenance is scheduled through Friday the 18th.  During this time, BlackBoard will be unavailable to campus.  Faculty and students can download their work from BlackBoard prior to this time so that they may continue to work on it during the upgrade.

On Friday, December 18th at 6:00 PM, ITS is installing a new network intrusion prevention system (IPS).  This will improve the protection of UNCW’s network from attacks.  The implementation window is six to eight hours. During this time, on-campus network communication will continue to work; however, all traffic to and from the Internet will be disrupted.  ITS anticipates the downtime to be limited to a brief outage, but reserves the entire maintenance window to complete the work.  Please note that access to campus resources via the UNCW VPN will be operational.

On Monday, December 21st, ITS is implementing new aggregation switches in its datacenters to improve network traffic.  Beginning after 5:00 PM, ITS staff will cut over to the new switches.  The migration plan is designed to limit downtime.

If you experience any issues outside of these maintenance windows, please contact the TAC (, 910-962-4357).
