Sharon Lindgren Receives 2016 Staff Award for Excellence, 13 Others Recognized for Exemplary Service

Sharon Lindgren, executive assistant in the Office of the Provost, received the 2016 UNCW Staff Award for Excellence and 13 other employees were honored at the Sept. 14 ceremony at the Burney Center. Her name will be submitted as a candidate for the Governor’s Award of Excellence, the highest honor bestowed on a state employee.

“Sharon is very deserving of this honor, and we are proud that she will represent UNCW as our nominee for the Governor’s Award of Excellence,” said Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli.

Lindgren was chosen from among 14 employees whose supervisors or co-workers nominated them for exemplary service. Each one was recognized at the Sept. 14 event. The other nominees were:

Candace Blanke, administrative associate, Watson College of Education;
Michelle Cummings, events and boards manager, University Advancement;
Karen Doniere, administrative specialist, Department of English;
Eddie Dunn, tech support analyst, Department of Computer Science;
Patty Fox, grants officer, Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance;
Eric Griffin, assistant director and safety and emergency manager, Environmental Health & Safety;
Brenda Jarrell, administrative specialist, Department of Management, Cameron School of Business;
Steve Miller, assistant general counsel;
Carol Page, assistant director of purchasing, Business Affairs;
Kathryn (Kat) Pohlman, sustainability coordinator, Environmental Health & Safety;
Katie Vance, victim advocate, CARE (Collaboration for Assault Response and Education), Student Affairs;
Carol Way, administrative associate, School of Health and Applied Human Sciences; and
Sarah White, business services coordinator, College of Health and Human Services.

Sharon Lindgren Staff Award Excellence 2016

Lindgren, who serves as executive assistant to both the provost and the associate vice chancellor of academic affairs, has been with UNCW since 1997. During that time she has worked with five provosts, as well as other university leaders. Her current responsibilities include serving as a liaison between the provost’s office and the chancellor’s office, UNC General Administration, department chairs and directors and students. She also handles scheduling and other duties for the provost.

In her nomination letter, Provost Marilyn Sheerer lauded Lindgren for her extraordinary dedication to the UNCW community and to Wilmington. “Sharon has made a difference at UNCW, exemplified the mission of the university and has positively impacted the people of North Carolina,” the nomination read.

As the recipient of the Staff Award for Excellence, Lindgren will receive $1,500, a reserved parking space for a year, a framed certificate and a commemorative clock, and her name will be placed on the Award for Excellence plaque in Alderman Hall.

Each nominee receives a framed certificate and three days of additional vacation time.
