UNCW ADMINISTRATOR MENTORING PROGRAM FOR FACULTY
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT WILMINGTON
WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA 28403
Contact: Caroline Clements
The UNCW Administrator Mentoring Program for faculty is designed to guide and encourage faculty who are interested in moving into an administrative position. This pilot program will be evaluated by participants after one year.
Why do we need such a program?
There are many promising members of the faculty who have never considered administrative service. This program would connect the faculty member who would like to quietly learn more about administrative service with an appropriate mentor. The request and the pairing would be done in confidence, to encourage faculty to consider service as an administrator.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any full-time tenured faculty member may request an administrative mentor. Any administrator at the Chair/Director level or above may serve as a mentor. Goals for the mentoring relationship will be designed to meet individual needs.
What are the benefits to Administrative Mentees?
a greater knowledge of organizational structure, priorities, politics, and culture
guidance in advancing in administrative positions in the university
participation in an administrative project
an understanding of the relationship between programs and resources
What are the benefits to the Administrative Mentors?
the satisfaction of extending a guiding hand to a colleague
the satisfaction of facilitating communication across disciplines
a new, reinvigorating outlook on one’s own job
an opportunity to help recruit able faculty into administrative positions
How will the pairs be chosen?
Eligible individuals interested in being an administrative mentee or mentor should complete the attached application/registration form, which should be submitted to the Center for Faculty Leadership, Randall Library 2038. A coordinator in the Provost’s office will review the forms and identify a potential mentor for each applicant. In cases where appropriate matches cannot be made from the mentor pool, an appropriate faculty administrator would be contacted and their participation requested. Only those who are interested in participating would do so.
