Bassoon Master of Music, East Carolina University Bachelor of Music, East Carolina University A native of Christiansburg, Virginia, Valanda L. Nelson joined the UNCW woodwind faculty in 2006. Her principal teachers include Caren Hinson, Kim David Peoria (formerly of the Virginia Symphony), and Chris Ulffers. Nelson is an active freelance bassoonist and has performed with such orchestras as the North Carolina Symphony, Roanoke Symphony Pops Orchestra (Virginia), the Longbay Symphony Orchestra (South Carolina), Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and the Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed for faculty recitals at Barton College, Mount Olive College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, as well as with the faculty quintet at UNCW.
