MarineQuest Boy Scouts Jamboree
Oceanography Badge Program
Does you troop or individual scout want to join the MarineQuest staff for a day of exploring the marine habitats of coastal Wilmington and participate in lab experiments at the UNCW Center for Marine Science, but is too small for a private group reservation? If so the MarineQuest Boy Scouts Jamboree is for you!
This day will begin with a tour of the Center for Marine Science where Boy Scouts will learn about the variety of careers involved in marine science (R,1) and have a chance to view the Gulf Stream display and discuss how this underwater current influences our local weather (R,2). In the MarineQuest lab, Boy Scouts will become marine chemists as they examine the salts, gases and nutrients that make up our oceans water (R,2 & 5) and marine geologists as they explore the underwater world of ocean topography (R,4 & 9). During the afternoon this program heads out for a variety of field activities where Boy Scouts will explore the nutrient rich salt marshes(R,6 & 7) and discover the forces of ocean waves through Boogie Board Oceanography (R,3). This is a full-day of fun, adventure and learning.
This program will allow Boy Scouts to fulfill all the requirements for this Badge except for requirement 8 which can be completed after the MarineQuest program.
MarineQuest does not provide badges. A certificate of completed requirements will be provided. Boy Scouts should provide the completed certificate to a Scout Master who can then issue individual badges.
