Licensing and Trademarks Policies

Goods and products bearing UNCW logos or UNCW trademarked verbiage to be used by businesses, vendors, or a division, department or organization of the university, must be obtained from a licensed manufacturer and approved by UNCW Licensing prior to production.

UNCW logos and trademarked verbiage are the property of UNCW. Use of UNCW logos must comply with UNCW policies, which apply to all visual representations of the university: signs, video productions, exhibit materials, websites etc., as well as printed and electronic publications.

No department, division, organization may authorize the production of merchandise bearing the university's name or logo, or authorize or produce items that combine the logo with any other name or logo unless approved by UNCW Licensing and all appropriate administrative office(s).

Printed Material

The UNCW Brand Identity Guide applies to all visual communications that represent the university to a significant audience, either internally or externally. This includes, but is not limited to printed publications, Web sites, shirts, video productions, exhibit materials, specialty items, and signage for buildings and vehicles.

The "house" logo and the words "University of North Carolina Wilmington" or "UNC Wilmington" must appear prominently on the front cover of all university publications as well as on posters and flyers.

Logos and icons created for use on the Web must never be used for print purposes. Because the resolution of Web images is 72 dpi, quality in printed pieces will be severely compromised.

Use of University Marks

Only appropriate use of the university's marks is permitted.

  • No references to alcohol, drugs or tobacco-related products may be used.
  • No material that may be demeaning to individuals or institutions (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, or disability-related matters) may be used.
  • No profanity may be used.

Colors

  • Logos must be reproduced in the university's official PMS colors in approved combinations.
  • Official colors of UNC Wilmington are specified using the Pantone Matching System (PMS).
    • Seahawk Teal: PMS 329
    • Seahawk Yellow: PMS 108
    • Seahawk Navy: PMS 281
    • Seahawk Gold Accent (Sammy C Hawk Logo & Seahawk Spirit Logo): PMS 120

Modifications

  • Licensed university logos may not be distorted or redrawn, rescanned, stretched, repositioned or modified in any form.
  • The Seahawk Spirit logo must never be reversed and must always face left.
  • New Athletic Logos should always follow color and application guidelines. 

University Seal

The seal of the University of North Carolina Wilmington is used to authenticate official university documents and to communicate the significance of special occasions and events. It is reserved for more formal uses such as graduation programs, transcripts, diplomas, annual reports and certificates. It may be watermarked into official letterhead.

The seal is not a university logo and is not interchangeable with the UNCW house logo. The seal is a federally registered trademark. Due to the restrictive nature of its use, it does not require the ® on materials produced by UNCW.

Use of the university seal is not part of the university system for use on merchandise. However, some exceptions are made for use on merchandise of distinction. Contact us for more information. 

Use with Other Trademarks (co-branding)

  • Any use of university marks with other trademarks must be approved by UNCW Licensing or through university contract.

Consumables

  • Must have expiration date on the packages.

Current Players

  • No use of current players' names, images or likeness is permitted that would violate NCAA rules and regulations.

UNCW Music and Songs

  • Any commercial use of UNCW music and songs requires written permission through UNCW Licensing.
