Computrace/Lo-Jack Overview
Computrace (for organizations) and Lo-Jack (for individual purchases) are programs by Absolute Software that assist with the recovery of stolen computers. Absolute Software is so confident about their product that they guarantee up to $1,000 per system if a computer can't be recovered.
Computrace for University-Owned Systems
Computrace is a silent, background program that assists with the recovery of computers stolen from the university. IT Security can request that certain file types be deleted if a stolen machine is known to have confidential data. All new UNCW computers are required to come with a 5-year Computrace license. This includes all manufacturers, regardless of funding source.
Retrofit Computrace license program for university-owned computers purchased prior to January 2009:
The retrofit license can ONLY be purchased for older computers already on campus that were originally purchased without Computrace. This special program has been offered to the university by Absolute Software at the request of UNCW to get older systems into the program. Each retrofit license is good for 3 years at a total cost of $25 per system.

- To have Computrace installed and activated: Notify IT Resource Management (962-4152) when you receive your license and computer. Please include the location of the machine and a contact name.
To report a stolen / missing university computer, contact the University Police.
Lo-Jack for Personal Purchases
Lo-Jack tracks, locates and recovers stolen computers. Absolute Software is so confident in their product that they guarantee up to $1,000 per system if a computer can't be recovered. Faculty, staff and students who wish to order Lo-Jack for their personal computers can either purchase a 4-year Student Edition license from B1NAR1ES for $85 (best deal) or can order directly from Absolute Software. The Student Edition is comparable to the Premium Edition on Absolute Software's Web site.
