The University of North Carolina Wilmington is accepting applications for an 11-month Academic Advisor in the Watson College of Education. The candidate will join a small team of academic advisors who advise undergraduate students in programs within the Watson College of Education (WCE). The individual will report to the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

The selected candidate will serve a large caseload of advisees who are both transfer and freshmen-start students, by assisting them with course mapping, reading degree audits, navigating university policies and procedures, and referrals to appropriate university support agencies. The advisor will serve as a liaison between program faculty members and their advisees, thus requiring intricate knowledge of university studies and academic program requirements. The advisor will participate in and lead orientation events, provide group and individual advising, assist with recruitment efforts, and maintain relationships with area community colleges. The individual will be expected to travel monthly to extension sites such as Brunswick Community College, Southeastern Community College, and Bladen Community College.

The successful candidate will be student-oriented, demonstrate the ability to clearly interpret and articulate complex academic requirements and policies/procedures, exhibit strong oral and written communication skills, maintain detailed records, demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, and work effectively with students, faculty members, peer advisors, and key campus constituents. The position requires a self-motivated individual who is highly organized and can work both independently and collaboratively. The individual should embrace technology and be willing to use it as a tool for communication, a way to create efficiency in the advising process, and as a means of recording and reporting data.

The position will begin upon hire. A master’s degree is required. Experience in higher education and/or school settings is preferred.
