The UNCW Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a tenure track, assistant professor position in Performance Studies to begin August 2010. Applicants should have Ph.D. completed by August 2010, but ABD’s will be considered if dissertation is at or near completion at time of hire.
Position Description: We seek a specialist in Performance Studies, with an emphasis on the development and oral performance of narrative texts. The successful candidate will design and teach courses in some or all of the following program areas: introductory- and advanced-level performance studies, introductory- and advanced-level storytelling, ethnography of performance, experimental theatre. In secondary areas of interest (e.g., interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, public speaking), as well as in core requirements for the major, opportunities exist to develop and deliver courses anchored in performance methods and perspectives. The ideal candidate will be prepared to continue some form of our department’s service learning program through performance and storytelling in area schools or other suitable venues. Research and scholarship, which may include artistic productivity, are also expected.
The department is housed in a building featuring “smart” classrooms, an iMac computer lab, and a television studio and video edit suite. Our program enrolls more than 500 majors, who are required to complete a two-course gateway sequence. Department faculty members are collegial and collaborative, and care deeply about teaching, scholarship and meaningful service. UNCW is a growing comprehensive university committed to teaching, scholarship and service. Its beautiful 640-acre campus is in an historic port city five miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
