Periplus

"A periplus (/ˈpɛrɪplʌs/) is a manuscript document that lists the ports and coastal landmarks, in order and with approximate intervening distances, that the captain of a vessel could expect to find along a shore... In that sense the periplus was a type of log." (from Wikipedia)

Published by the Honors Student Media Board, Periplus is the Honors newsletter published triannually--once each in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Periplus prints features on Honors classes, professors, students and their research, events, speakers, alumni, and more. It helps students, alumni, faculty, and parents keep updated about what's going on at Honors, whether it be what students did over the summer or who's graduating with full University Honors. Periplus was founded in its current form in 2009.

Getting Involved

Periplus is entirely written, edited, photographed, and designed by Honors students! We are always looking for new contributors. You can write a story about any aspect of the Honors experience you find interesting, from first-year events like the Beach Sweep to interviews with students and professors about their research. We can provide story ideas if you're stumped. By working with Periplus, you are gaining valuable experience in professional writing, publication, editing, and more. (And it's not just for English majors--writing for Periplus is a great way for STEM folks to practice writing effectively about their field and research!)

To learn more about getting involved with Periplus, please email the current Editor-in-Chief, Nikki Kroushl, at nkk6885@uncw.edu.

Why is Periplus Important?

Periplus is distributed to current and future students, parents, alumni, and members of the community surrounding Honors. It updates all interested parties about the goings-on in Honors, from College-wide events like the Spring Speaker to individual students' accomplishments. It also serves as a chronicle of how Honors grows and changes over the years--a living archive that is made by and reflective of Honors students.

As an Honors student, Periplus directly benefits you. The back of the newsletter includes an option for alumni, parents, and other community members to donate to the Honors College to help fund the programs and scholarships that make Honors such a unique experience. Donations made through Periplus help fund the free theater and movie tickets, research supplies grants, public lectures, and even scholarships that the Honors College is proud to facilitate.
