Master of Arts (MAT) in
Secondary Education
Goal of Program:
MAT program prepares future teachers to create innovative and interactive learning environments meeting the needs of today’s high school students. As part of course requirements, students are given the chance to work closely with area high school educators who are leading the way with progressive and new educational programs such as small learning communities and early college programs. The MAT program facilitates the necessary skill building for students to pursue their passion for teaching and become a teacher leader in today’s public schools.
Program Audience:
- Program offers an opportunity for students with an undergraduate degree in Math, Science, History and English who are seeking a secondary teaching license.
Program Highlights:
- One Year ‘apprenticeship’ in secondary classrooms preparing teacher candidates to teach in both large, traditional high school settings and small learning communities, such as Freshman Academies and Early Colleges.
- An emphasis on broad issues of diversity, including the development of culturally responsive pedagogy, serving students with special needs, and teaching English Language Learners.
- A focus on strong content preparation, effective curriculum design, and leadership training and development.
- ‘Cohort’ model that builds on the value of group support and reflection through shared and meaningful interdisciplinary experiences.
- Global connections to the high school curriculum and overall secondary experience.
