Graduate Teaching Assistants

Requests for Teaching Assistants

During the spring semester, the graduate dean meets with the department chairperson and graduate coordinator to discuss the department’s needs for graduate teaching assistants and out-of-state tuition remissions. At this time, the number of graduate teaching assistantships assigned to a graduate program are assessed, and requests for new teaching assistants initiated. All requests for additional graduate teaching assistants must be submitted to the graduate dean during the spring semester.

Workload

The graduate coordinator and the department chairperson determine the duties of graduate teaching assistants. Normally, graduate teaching assistants who have a half-time (.5 FTE) TA are required to work 20 hours per week. Duties may include instruction in laboratory sections of lecture classes, grading examinations, recording attendance in large lecture sections, setting-up video or slide presentations in course lecture sections, and assisting the graduate coordinator as deemed necessary.

Campus Employment of Graduate Students (Applies to Assignments processed on Human Resources 1.35G forms).

Graduate students may be employed on campus. Normally, these assignments do not exceed 20 hours per week during the regular fall or spring term. The Graduate School on a temporary, case-by-case basis may approve additional hourly work on campus; however, the total assignment should not exceed 30 hours per week. Before approving all assignments the Graduate School verifies that the student is not on academic probation. Student employment at the university is secondary to academic activities; therefore, departments should exercise flexibility, within reason and operational constraints, in scheduling student work hours. It is the responsibility of each academic unit to ensure that a student’s academic effort is not compromised by his/her work responsibilities

HR 1.35Gs (GRADUATE STUDENT PAYROLL ACTION FORM)

Graduate students who are hired on campus to work in any department must have a HR 1.35G prepared to initiate the payroll action for payment. Most HR 1.35s are entered on HR Online – (position controlled and research grants). This includes but is not limited to the following:

Please refer to the Employee Policies and Procedures website to procedure HR 1.35G (http://www.uncw.edu/policies/hrspapolicies-L2.htm) for complete instructions on filling out and routing the forms.
