Course Description

GLS 592: Spring Palaver Publishing Practicum

Instructor: Ashley Hudson

This is an asynchronous, online course in the publication of the student-run, online, national interdisciplinary journal Palaver, housed in the Graduate Liberal Studies program. Students enrolled in the course will be staff members of Palaver and will be credited on the Spring 2018 Palaver masthead. The practicum’s coursework will consist of tasks related to becoming part of a team that will put out an issue of the journal. The course will immerse students in various behind-the-scenes aspects of running an online interdisciplinary journal, including editorial decisions, web design, layout, and publicity. We end the semester with the publication of an issue of Palaver and a release party.

Early in the semester we will determine each student’s role in the course, based on your interests and Palaver’s needs. All Palaver staff roles will require students to operate various computer programs (see “Required Materials” below). We will work together to determine which role is best for you based on your experience, your goals, and your comfort level in trying unfamiliar technology.

Weekly assessments include completion of practical tasks by deadlines, guided by the instructor/Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor of Palaver. You will view tutorials and guided instructions to complete tasks, and periodically will be required to schedule a conference online with the instructor/Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor for feedback and advice. Final grades are determined by meeting weekly requirements by deadline, participation and prompt communication, and submission of a final portfolio (examples of your best work and a brief narrative about the work you completed, for potential use in future employment opportunities). GLS students may repeat the course twice for up to 6 hours of credit. Please contact the instructor Ashley Hudson at hudsona@uncw.edu to discuss any questions and how you may fit in to the Palaver staff.
