Course Description

GLS 592: Fall Palaver Publishing Practicum

Instructor: Ashley Hudson

This is a practical course in the publication of the student-run, online, national interdisciplinary journal Palaver, housed in the Graduate Liberal Studies program. The coursework will consist of reading submissions and becoming part of an editorial team that will put out an issue of the journal. The course will immerse students in all aspects of running an online interdisciplinary journal, including editorial decisions, web design, as well as copy editing and publicity. We end the semester with the publication of an issue of Palaver and a release party. Everyone will be responsible for reading and commenting on a number of submissions by deadline, contributing to ongoing practical tasks, and participating in a group with a specific focus (to be determined by your interests and the journal’s needs). We will look to other journals, both academic and literary, online and print, to inform our exploration and execution of journal publication. Weekly assessments include completion of practical tasks, reading and commenting on submissions according to deadlines, and occasional exercises in topics of writing, publication, and copy editing. Major assignments are based on collective and group objectives and may include oral presentations and written assessments. GLS students may repeat the course twice for up to 6 hours of credit.
