GLS 592: Introduction to the African American LGBTQ Tradition

Selected texts will introduce students to creative literature, filmic media, and academic essays which constitute the African American LGBTQ tradition. Students will engage various schools of thought which aim to illustrate, define, politicize, theorize, or historicize same-sex eroticism, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans identities/experiences from an African American perspective. Some of the films/web serials are available free online and screenings for those will be assigned in advance of class meetings. Requirements: discussion facilitation (assigned), weekly analytical response paper (1-2 p), and a literature review paper which will be developed over the course of the semester.
