GGY 424: Advanced GIS
Advanced concepts and practical use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including spatial data structures, metadata, data collection, database design, projections and coordinate systems, cartographic representation, querying, map overlay, geocoding, editing in ArcMap, and network analysis. Instruction will be provided through lectures and lab work although we will also have online instruction through Backboard/Vista. The course will begin with a review of the fundamentals of GIS and then cover various spatial analysis techniques (see schedule). Students are responsible for completing the reading assignments, participating in classroom discussions, and performing GIS exercises. The lectures and labs will consist of readings from your text as well as others that I may assign, guest lectures, and other material to make the class less structured and more informal. In that regard, it is imperative that each student come to class prepared and willing to participate in the class. The goal is to learn the techniques from the textbook and then relate these techniques to the theory of GIS. Since pursuing a GIS career may be a goal for you, throughout the semester I will introduce current events in the industry.
