Foreign Language Requirements

Foreign Language (3-6 hours):

Required: Proficiency through the 201 level, or the 102 level in a “second” foreign language.

Students will demonstrate proficiency by completing a course at 201 level or higher in a language previously studied, or at the 102 level in a language not previously studied (3-6 hours).

FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: University Studies requirement is required

  • If a first-year student had two or more units of a language in HS and wishes to continue in that language, then the studentmust take the placement test.
    • If the student places into 120 (and passes), the student will also need to take 201 (and pass) to satisfy the requirements.
    • If the student places into 201 or above and passes the course, the FL requirement will be satisfied.
  • If a first-year student has two or more units of a language in HS, but wishes to go into another language with only one unit in HS, or no previous instruction in that language, the student may enroll in 101 with permission from FLL and must complete 102 in order to satisfy the FLL requirement.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

  • If a transfer student has had two or more blocks/years of a foreign language in HS and they wish to continue in that language, the student must take the placement test:
      • If the student places into 120 (and pass), the student will also need to take 201(and pass) to satisfy the requirements.
      • If the student places into 201 or above and passes the course, the FL requirement will be satisfied.
  • If the student transfers a college Foreign Language course from the same language taken in high school, then the student can enroll in the next level course at UNCW until the 201 level is completed successfully.
  • If the student transfers a college Foreign Language course from the same language taken in high school at the equivalent of our 201 level, then the requirement is satisfied.
  • If the student transfers a college Foreign Language course from a language different than that taken in high school, then the student can satisfy the language requirement with the 102 level.
  • If the student wishes to fulfill the language requirement with a language not previously taken or with one year or less of HS instruction in that language, then the student may enroll in a 101 level and proceed taking the subsequent courses until the 201 level is complete, which will then satisfy the FLL requirement.
