Meet Our Staff

Frederick Holding

Frederick Holding, Interim Director

Fred received his Bachelor's from The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Master's from North Carolina Central University. He has nearly 20 years of experience working in higher education (most at Duke University) in the following areas: Residence Life, Student Accounts, Registration, Athletics, and Financial Aid. Fred started as Associate Director in the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid and was appointed as Interim Director in August, 2015.

Shannon Miles

Assistant Director Counseling Services & Veterans Representative

Shannon has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2002. She serves as one of the assistant directors whose primary duties are twofold. She oversees the financial aid counseling team, who provide aid to both the undergraduate and graduate student population and she serves as a VA certifying official on campus. Shannon holds an undergraduate degree from Roger Williams University and a Master's Degree in Higher Education from Capella University.

Essence has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2013. She serves as a financial aid counselor for an undergraduate population. Essence earned her Bachelor of Arts from Greensboro College in 2010, where she also began her career in higher education as a Residence Hall Director.

Lydia Faison

Financial Aid Counselor & Web Content Manager

Lydia worked in higher education at the community college level for six years before coming to UNCW in 2006. She serves as a financial aid counselor and as the Web Content Manager for the office's website. She holds a BS from Coppin State University. 

Denise Gattison

Senior Financial Aid Counselor & Student Athletes

Denise has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2007. She serves as one of the financial aid counselors and oversees athletic aid and an undergraduate caseload as well. Denise holds a BA in Business and a MA in Education, Higher Education specialty, both from Ashford University. 

Alton Johnson

Financial Aid Counselor, Veterans' Representative & Student Athletes

Alton has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since October, 2014. He is a seven year, US Navy, Persian Gulf War veteran. He serves as lead counselor for the entire veterans' population, serves an undergraduate and graduate financial aid caseload and enjoys offering financial aid.  Alton holds an AS degree in Business Administration, has several service medals and plans to finish his bachelor's in Business Administration at UNCW. 

Daniel Sanchez 

Financial Aid Counselor

Dan received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Weber State University and his MA in Education from Trident University International. He began working in financial aid administration in 2010, serving as Financial Aid Counselor, and then Assistant Director of Financial Aid, for the University of Mount Olive. Dan has been with the UNCW Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2015.

Tania has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2008. She serves as Graduate Counselor and Outreach Coordinator. She also oversees a population of undergraduate students. Tania is an alumni and holds an undergraduate and a Master's degree from UNCW.

Andrea Brewer

Scholarship Counselor & Study Abroad and SOAR Programs Coordinator 

Andrea has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since 2015. She serves as a financial aid counselor and coordinator for the SOAR Ambassador scholarship program. Andrea received her undergraduate degree from Catawba College and completed her Master's degree in Classics and a doctoral program in Comparative Literature at Florida State University. Prior to working in financial aid, she served as a faculty member at four other institutions. She relocated to Wilmington with her daughters from the Asheville area.

Steve MacKinnon

Business Officer

Steve has been with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid since February, 2015.  Steve holds two Bachelor's degrees, one of which is a B.B.A. in Accounting. Originally from the Baltimore/Washington area, Steve is a licensed CPA with over 15 years of financial and accounting experience in manufacturing and corporate settings, transferring his knowledge and expertise to the university setting.
