The UNCW School of Nursing (SON) received a Department of Education Congressionally-directed grant in 2008 to plan a fast-track, accelerated nursing program. Accelerated students will be able to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) within 16-18 months of SON admission.
The proposed target program start date is August 2010. Students must have all the nursing prerequisites completed BEFORE they apply to the nursing program (approximately 60 credits). Priority consideration will be given to applicants who are active duty, a veteran, or a military dependent living in Onslow County. Other admission criteria and timelines will be forthcoming.
Accelerated Nursing Program Basics (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, June 2008)
- Accelerated baccalaureate programs offer the quickest route to licensure as a registered nurse (RN) for adults who have already completed a bachelor’s or graduate degree in a non-nursing discipline.
- Fast-track baccalaureate programs take shorter periods of time to complete compared to traditional nursing four year programs.
- Accelerated nursing programs are available in 43 states plus the District of Columbia and Guam. In 2007, there were 205 accelerated baccalaureate programs and 56 accelerated master’s programs available at nursing schools nationwide. In addition, 37 new accelerated baccalaureate programs are in the planning stages, and 13 new accelerated master's programs are also taking shape. For a list of accelerated nursing programs.
