Master of Arts In Teaching (M.A.T.) in Elementary Education
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Program (Elementary Focus) is designed for students that already hold a bachelor’s degree, but have little or no background in education. Successful completion of the program will lead to NC Elementary Education certification (K-6) and prepare educators to teach as elementary classroom teachers. Field placements are required during each semester of the program. Students that work full-time during school hours will need to adjust their schedules accordingly. During the final semester, students will be required to complete a full-time Internship in an elementary school setting. The Internship will require students to be in the classroom each day from 7:30 – 3:00, at a minimum. Outside employment during the internship is not advised.

Specialization Objectives
Upon completion of the graduate MAT in Elementary Education, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate a depth and breadth of general knowledge in the field of Elementary Education
- Demonstrate well-articulated theoretical beliefs and pedagogical practices relevant to K-6 classroom/school communities
- Demonstrate effective communication skills that can be utilized when interacting with colleagues, administrators, and families
- Design, implement, and assess effective instruction, with particular emphasis on integrated curriculum, creative and innovative teaching methodologies, and active learning strategies
- Establish a classroom environment sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of all students
- Effectively utilize technology to enhance the academic achievement of elementary learners
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills within the school environment and beyond
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree completed before graduate study begins
- Official copies of transcripts of college work (graduate and undergraduate). An undergraduate grade average of “B” (GPA = 3.0) or better is recommended
- Completion of undergraduate coursework in physical/health education and arts
- Official scores on Miller Analogies Test (score of 400) or Graduate Record Exam. A score of 400 or higher on the Miller Analogies Test, or combined score of 1000 or higher on the Graduate Record Exam recommended
- Three letters of recommendations by individuals in relevant professional fields
- A letter of interest describing commitment to the teaching profession, prior experiences working with children, prior experiences in elementary schools, and philosophy of teaching and learning. Candidates for the M.A.T program are strongly urged to have experience with children documented before they apply in order to be knowledgeable about education in elementary school settings and students. Such experience may include substitute teaching, part-time teaching, volunteer work, summer camps, babysitting, daycare, tutoring, etc.
