Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards


Undergraduate Students:

  • American Association of University Women
    This is a $500 Scholarship given to a female student who is a rising senior in Mathematics or Science. Preference is given to North Carolina residents who have been at the University all three years. AAUW interviews and makes the selection based on a combination of grade point average and educational career objectives.
    Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office in James Hall.

 

  • UNCW Alumni Association Merit Scholarships
    Applicants must have a minimum of 3.5 grade point average on all high school or college work. Students may be in-state or out-state. The scholarships cover $1,500 of in-state tuition and fees.
    Send an application, a certified transcript, and two complete Recommendation for Award forms to the Alumni Relations Office. Download applications here.
  • Department of Geography and Geology Student Research Grant Information
    The Department of Geography and Geology awards funds for undergraduate and graduate student research. These grants can be used to support any aspect of research, including field work and research-related travel, analyses, photographic processing, thin-section preparation, equipment, and supplies. Please note that this program does not fund travel or registration for professional conferences. Individual grants are limited to a maximum of $500.00.

    Applicants must meet the following criteria for eligibility:

1) Required Student Status

a. Junior or Senior undergraduate major in Geography or Geology involved in Directed Independent or Honors work or

b. Degree-seeking M.S. Geology student, in at least the second semester at UNCW, who is conducting thesis research and/or non-thesis research with a project that requires materials, etc.


2) GPA of 3.0 overall or GPA of 3.2 in the major.

3) Major advisor is a faculty member in Geography and Geology.

4) A final report on any previously received award must have been submitted by the stipulated deadline. Students that have not submitted a summary from previous grants are not eligible for further support.

Shew, Department of Geography and Geology by April 1, 2009. The application form may be obtained from your advisor or downloaded from here. Decisions on funding will be made by the Awards Committee, based on the quality of the project and write-up as well as the justification for the monies. Notification of awards will be made in early April.

IMPORTANT: The justification should include a summary of the project (goals, maps, pictures, questions to be answered) as well as how you propose to approach and answer the question(s) posed including some of the techniques/tools that you will use during the study.

As mentioned on the application, a short summary (Executive Summary) of the results of the project (though some may be interim reports) as well as a poster must be completed and shown in the Fall 2009 Semester. The likely showing times will be during Earth Sciences Week.

 

  • Dr. Melanie Crandall Geography and Geology Scholarship
    The Dr. Melanie Crandall Geography and Geology Scholarship is a cash award that recognizes outstanding academic achievement and commitment to community service by a UNCW Geography and Geology student. The selection is made by a faculty committee.
