Adult Scholars Leadership Program
The Adult Scholars Leadership Program engages seniors with community leaders, experts and policy makers to proactively explore, learn and participate in solutions to our regional challenges. The program provides participants with a political, economic, educational, law enforcement, historical and cultural view of the region; identifies and responds to critical challenges in our region; encourages participants to become involved in community activities as volunteers; and inspires participants to create events that meet their needs and benefit the community.
Senior Outreach Services (SOS) is an opportunity where seniors translate their life skills and professional experience into meaningful volunteer service with the university and community. SOS harnesses the intellectual capital of active seniors to help solve real problems and enhance the quality of life in our area. We do this by connecting SOS members with UNC Wilmington faculty and students, regional organizations and community leaders to work on issues where SOS members have experience, expertise or simply a deep interest.

Senior Outreach Services (SOS)
What are Senior Outreach Services?
Senior Outreach Service (SOS) is an opportunity that allows seniors to translate their life skills and professional experience into meaningful volunteer service with the university and community. SOS harnesses the intellectual capital of seniors to help solve real problems and enhance the quality of life in our area. We do this by connecting participants with UNC Wilmington faculty and students, regional organizations and community leaders to work on issues where SOS members have experience, expertise or simply a deep interest.
What are the projects?
Part of SOS involves identifying your unique experiences, talents and interests. We are working with university faculty and area leaders to help identify projects that would benefit from SOS participation. You could partner on one of these projects, find your own project or even decide to become part of an “Intergenerational Brain Trust Team” that could tackle special projects throughout the university or nonprofit arena. The key is to use your experience and the insights gained through SOS programs to make a positive difference in the community!
What is the process?
The process is simple and the rewards are great. Three daytime classes provide an extensive overview of the challenges facing nearly 78 million baby boomers and their communities in the coming years. A self-assessment workshop provides you with an objective view of your talents and passions.
SOS participants choose the volunteer program which provides mutually beneficial relationships where their skills are utilized. Examples of projects include partnering with UNCW faculty; assisting non-profit organizations with leadeship and grant writing; and mentoring students.
