UNC Wilmington's Department of Computer Science Joins Select Group of Programs with ABET Accreditation
The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Systems Option) degree was recently awarded accreditation by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Computing Now Volunteer of the Month Award
The IEEE Computing Now “Volunteer of the Month” award recognizes volunteers making substantial innovations in content creation and delivery. We particularly value multimedia, social networking, and other innovative ways of publishing and delivering content.
This Month's Winner: Ricardo Valea
October's award goes to Ricardo Valea for his work on developing the Computing Now iPhone app. Ricardo is a graduate student in the computer science and information systems program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). He graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer science from UNCW in 2009. His research interests are mobile application development, user interface design, and agile software development.
CSC student receives UPE Scholarship
2011 Scholarship Awards - Each summer the Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon evaluates a large number of scholarship applications from students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All scholarship applicants are required to complete a comprehensive application form including a statement on their long-term plans for the profession, a summary of their contributions to their respective UPE chapters and related student activities at their university. Applicants are also required to submit all college-level transcripts and a recommendation from the UPE faculty adviser. Council is pleased to present our list of Scholarship Awards for 2011.
Yuli Bonner, a senior in the Department of Computer Science, has been awarded a scholarship for 2011-2012 by Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines.
Patterson, Furia discuss Songs of Hollywood
Associate computer science professor Laurie Patterson and creative writing professor Phil Furia will discuss their book The Songs of Hollywood (Oxford University Press, 2010) on Monday, Aug. 8 as guests of Prologue, the StarNews/WHQR book club. The book traces the history of song in musical and dramatic film, highlighting certain songs that Hollywood made famous. Furia is also an arts contributor at WHQR and hosts The Great American Songbook
Michelle Fogwell awarded Connie Harris Scholarship
Michelle Fogwell, a senior at UNCW was named the recipient of the Connie Harris Scholarship. "The Connie S. Harris Memorial Scholarship was created by The Red Tent Book Club in memory of Connie Harris, one of the original six members of the club. The recipient must have an indicated interest in pursuing a degree in engineering and must submit a two part essay outlining his/her interest in engineering and defining success." Fogwell will graduate in May 2012 with a degree in Computer Science and plans to go on to obtain her Master’s in Engineering.
