Here are examples of the assessment practices being implemented in departments within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Communications Studies and English
Communications Studies and English, along with the Watson School of Education, were accepted into Cohort 5 of the Inter/National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research (NCEPR, ncepr.org). NCEPR organizes research/practitioners to study the impact of eportfolios on student learning and educational outcomes, each year selecting 10 institutions for a new 3-year cohort.
The UNCW project seeks to study, through surveys and focus groups, and then optimize the use of electronic portfolios across the university and adopt best-practices that can be sustained over time and across administrations. During the Spring 2009 semester, students in ENG 496 are piloting the eportfolio feature in TaskStream (www.taskstream.com). Students in COM 490 create a paper-based portfolio. Students in both ENG 496 and COM 490 will be surveyed on their portfolio experiences (both electronic and paper-based).

Creative Writing
Since 2005-2006, the Creative Writing Department has been using a very well-formed template for reporting on its Program and Student Learning Outcomes..
English
The faculty teaching in the Professional Writing Certificate option for the BA in English have created well-defined and well-articulated Student Learning Outcome for their Program.
History
The Department of History uses a developmental rubric to assess students on the program student learning outcomes in HIS 290, HIS 400, and the masters thesis. Faculty are encouraged to use it in other course.
Public and International Affairs
The following reserach project and oral presentation rubrics are used in assessing student capstone projects in PLS 495.
Look for other examples to come.
