RE: Alleged Assault Victim Recants Story
The criminal investigation into an assault alleged
to have occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m., Aug. 20, on
the sidewalk between the Student Recreation Center and the
Gazebo has concluded the report was false. The female student
admitted to fabricating details she reported to UNCW Police.
The reason she provided misleading statements
to investigators is not known.
In cases that involve a potential threat to
the university and the community, UNCW will continue to focus
on the safety of the community and keep the community informed
and aware. Law enforcement’s job is to investigate complaints
and reach a logical conclusion. This case is not reflective
of crime victims in general and should in no way deter crime
victims from seeking assistance from law enforcement and other
community resources.
Case closed - unfounded.
