Astoria to Zion: Twenty-Six Stories of Risk and Abandon from Ecotone's First Decade has picked up its first national accolade, a Gold “IPPY” from Independent Publisher, in the anthology category. "IPPY" Awards recognize deserving but often unsung titles published by independent authors and publishers.

Astoria to Zion was published by Lookout Books, the literary book imprint of the UNCW Department of Creative Writing. Lookout Books grew out of collaboration between UNCW’s Publishing Laboratory and Ecotone, creative writing’s award-winning national literary magazine. The imprint’s debut title, Binocular Vision: New & Selected Stories by Edith Pearlman, landed on the cover of the New York Times Book Review and went on to win the National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction and Foreword Book of the Year.

"Astoria to Zion collects the best stories published in the pages in Ecotone magazine over our first decade, so this acknowledgment from Independent Publisher is particularly rewarding in that it celebrates the collective talents and extraordinary efforts of our editors and student staff throughout those years, and reaffirms the national reputation we've built as a preeminent venue for original short fiction," says Emily Louise Smith, director of The Publishing Laboratory.
