Students Honored with Annual Cornerstone Awards

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is proud to congratulate the students who received 2014 Cornerstone Awards during an April 22 ceremony held on campus. 

“The awards celebrate and recognize the contributions Seahawks have made to UNCW and the Wilmington community through engagement, leadership and service,” said Sonja Ardoin, director of the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement (OSLE).

The awards reflect “the involvement and dedication of UNCW students, both individually and collectively,” in the life of the campus and the community, she added.

Excellence in Engagement Recipients
The Excellence in Engagement Award is presented to a select group of sophomore, junior and transfer students for outstanding contributions to improving the quality of student life during their time at UNCW. Full award criteria are available on the OSLE website.

Margaret W. Lippitt Scholarship Award – Recipient: Rachel Leonor Lecates
The Margaret Walthour Lippitt Scholarship is presented to one first-year student. The recipient must be in good standing with the university and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. In addition, this first-year student should have distinguished himself/herself in the following ways: focus on academic success, active exploration of involvement and leadership on campus, service to the campus or community, potential to have a lasting impact on UNCW.

UNCW Laureate Award – Recipient: Vanessa Ashley Kopp
The UNCW Laureate Award, inspired by the Nobel Peace Prize, is presented to one sophomore or junior student. The recipient must be in good standing with the university and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. In addition, this sophomore or junior should have distinguished himself/herself in the following ways: maintains a passion for social justice and human rights, acts as an advocate for social change, facilitates organized action to create positive change on campus or in the community, educates others on local and global issues, initiates constructive dialogue which has encouraged reflection and positive change.

Martha M. Duncan Scholarship Award – Laura Darlington Garmany
The Martha M. Duncan Scholarship is presented to one sophomore or junior student. The recipient must be in good standing with the university and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. In addition, this sophomore or junior should have distinguished himself/herself in the following ways: excellence in his/her work with a student organization or in a university department, exemplary and consistent service to the UNCW campus community, committed to growth and development through leadership, emerging as a role model for his/her peers.
