The UNCW Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds will be joined by the US Army Ground Forces Band for a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 in Kenan Auditorium. The program will include selections by Frank Ticheli, John Barnes Chance, John Philip Sousa, Darius Milhaud, Jan Van der Roost, Philip Sparke, Alfred Reed, Arthur Pryor and Ernesto Lecuona.
Conducted by John P. LaCognata, Wind Symphony is UNCW’s premier symphonic band, comprised of music and non-music majors. They perform the finest literature, including traditional wind band repertoire, marches, transcriptions, and the newest 21st century works. Wind Symphony regularly features guest soloists and guest conductors.
Chamber Winds is comprised of the top musicians from each section of the Wind Symphony. The repertoire for the Chamber Winds includes works written for concert band and wind ensemble, as well as standard wind literature written for smaller ensembles of all sizes. Under LaCognata’s baton, Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds have become an important addition to Wilmington’s musical landscape.
The Army Ground Forces Band provides world-class music in support of U.S. Army Forces Command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, N.C. It serves as the musical ambassador of the American Combat Soldier to the American people, instilling pride and promoting patriotism through the performance of music at the local, regional and national levels.
Members are among the finest musicians in the United States Army Band Program, having studied music at leading universities and conservatories in the United States and abroad, and having passed highly selective auditions. As one of the Army's three major bands with a national touring mission, they give concerts around the country and hold free clinics and master classes for colleges, high school and middle school students.
Tickets for the Oct. 3 performance are $5 general public and free to students with valid UNCW ID. Kenan Auditorium box office opens at 6:30 p.m. There are no advance ticket sales.
