UNCW Leadership Studies Students Continue Partnership to Provide Troops with Free Calls Home
Thursday, October 18, 2012
UNCW Leadership (LED) Minor students continue their traditions of partnership and support for Cell Phones for Soldiers by collecting phones throughout October. There are as many as 369,000 troops serving in the U.S. military overseas who deserve the ability to talk to their loved ones back home. Every $5 given is the equivalent of 2.5 hours of FREE talk time. On average, Cell Phones for Soldiers distributes 12,000 calling cards each week to military bases, care package programs, deployment ceremonies and Veteran Association hospitals.
The UNCW and Wilmington communities can contribute and old and gently used phones on the UNCW campus through Oct. 26. Collection boxes have been placed in nine different locations on the UNCW campus - Admissions Office, Cameron School of Business, Center for Activities & Involvement (CAIC), Computer Information Systems Building (CIS), Fisher Center Information Desk, Friday Annex, Randall Library, Wagoner Hall and Watson College of Education.
The Leadership Studies students kicked off the community effort on Oct. 12 at the New Hanover vs. Laney High School football game and successfully collected more than $200 in donations. Cell phones as well as monetary donations will also be collected at these upcoming events: Oct. 17 at the UNCW vs. Georgia State Soccer Game beginning at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 19 and 20 at the Ghost Ship (Battleship, North Carolina) beginning at 6 p.m. and at Fuzzy Peach (250 Racine Drive Wilmington, NC 28403) in late October.
"Each year we have been humbled by the amount of people and organizations like UNCW's LED minor students that take the initiative to support our troops," said co-founder Brittany Bergquist. "We have also watched the communication gap between our armed forces and their loved ones continue to grow as more troops are deployed for their third or fourth tour overseas."
