Pressing South Call for Entries


A JURIED EXHIBITION OF LETTERPRESS PRINTING
FROM THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES


An exhibition co-sponsored by UNC Wilmington’s Department of Art & Art History and the UNCW Publishing Lab. This call for entries is an opportunity for all practicing letterpress artists in this region to submit their work for an exhibtion showcasing contemporary letterpress printing across the southeastern United States.

Eligibility
Open to all media free-standing or wall-mounted, excluding audio/video. All work must have been completed in the past two years. Work must be exhibition-ready. 2D and 3D work must not exceed UPS shipping limits.

Entry Requirements
All entries must be of original design, completed after January 1, 2005. Work created by more than one person must be so labeled. Work must have originated in the southeastern United States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia & West Virginia.)

Number of Entries: Up to three works may be entered. Entry fee is $35. Entry fees are not refundable under any circumstances except late entry.

Media: Open to all media free-standing or wall-mounted, excluding audio/video, with a primary focus on letterpress printing. Suites of prints and work with liquids will not be accepted. Work may be eliminated on conservation grounds.

Size restrictions: Three dimensional work cannot measure more than 24” in any one direction. Two dimensional work cannot measure any more than 36” in any one direction unless it can be rolled or folded for shipping. Works can’t weigh more than 16 lbs. each and can’t exceed UPS or FedEx shipping limits.

Work must be exhibition-ready: All works accepted for the exhibition must be prepared for installation (shipped with appropriate hanging devices and, where necessary, installation instructions).

Complete the entry form on the following page and send along with the entry fee, CD-ROMs and a short biographical statement to:

Selected artists will be sent detailed instructions for mailing or hand-delivering instructions for work accepted.

The CABAG cannot be responsible for the return of work if it does not receive a change of address notification. It will be the artist’s responsibility to inform the exhibition chair of any changes of address.

Image Requirements of Entries

Each artist may submit digital images of up to three entries. If necessary, one detail view per entry may be submitted, for a total of no more than six images. Two CDs must be submitted, one clearly labeled, with artist name, email, title of work, dimensions of work, pricing information, edition number, medium and a number (1–3) for each work. This must be accompanied with another CD of the same images labeled only with the dimensions of works. Format must be JPEG, 640 x 480 pixels, 72 DPI. The CDs will not be returned to the artist. The juror reserves to right to refuse an entry which has been significantly misrepresented by its digital image if the juror finds the work unacceptable for any reason.

First place: $500
Second place: $300
Third place: $200

Entry Fee
A non-refundable fee of $35 must accompany the entry form. Only cashiers checks or money orders will be accepted. Please make checks payable to the UNCW Department of Art & Art History.

Jurying
Work will be selected for the exhibition by the juror on the basis of the digital images. Notification of acceptance will be by e-mail only.

Judging Criteria
Entries will be judged for concept, design, illustration, typography and quality of production as well as originality of design and the function of the object.

Shipment of Work

Shipped work must arrive at UNCW between January 5–7 and postmarked no later than January 7, 2009. All shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist. Accepted work must be sent with return UPS or FedEx barcoded shipping label enclosed. You can set up an online account at UPS or FedEx. No charges accrue until your package is shipped. If work sells, return shipping is not charged as the box will not be shipped. All return shipping MUST be by FedEx or UPS. No exceptions. No COD’s. Shipping container must be reusable; please use bubble wrap.

Liability And Responsibility
The CABAG will take every precaution in handling accepted artwork, which will be insured while at the gallery at UNCW. In the event of theft or damage, the CABAG will only cover 60 percent of the sale price, which is what the artist would receive if the work sold, or the insurance value if the work is not for sale. UNCW must be notified of claims within seven days of the return shipment. Submission of work and signature on the entry form shall constitute on agreement on the part of the artist to the conditions set forth in this prospectus. Acceptance of an entry in the exhibition shall further include permission to photograph work or download the image for publicity.

Sales

A commission of 40% will be retained by EBW on all sales. A sale price or not for sale (NFS) value
must be indicated for all work. Art work NFS should have a value exclusive of commission for insurance purposes.

Juror, Frank Brannon
Frank Brannon is a graduate of the M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama and is proprietor of SpeakEasy Press. The limited edition, letterpress books that Frank produces are held in several special collections libraries in the United States and England as well as with private collectors. In 2008 Frank was lead letterpress instructor for the Penland School of Crafts Winter Residency in Letterpress. He resides in Dillsboro, North Carolina.
