Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Arts Degree

The Department of Anthropology offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology that is
designed to give students a thorough grounding in the liberal arts and basic competency in all facets of anthropology to prepare them for immediate employment or advanced studies in
anthropology or allied fields.

Computer Competency Requirement: To satisfy the computer competency requirement for the B.A. degree in anthropology a student must successfully complete ANT 210 or 326.

Oral Communication Competency Requirement: To satisfy the oral communication competency requirement for the B.A. degree in anthropology a student must successfully complete ANT 440, 450 or COM 110.

Requirements for a Major in Anthropology for the B.A. degree: 37 hours. To be distributed as follows:
Core: 13 hours. ANT 206, 207, ANTL 207, ANT 210, 450.
Subfields: 18 hours from the three subfields (300-400 level) with a minimum of 6 hours
from each subfield:

Archaeology: ANT 307, 308, 310, 311, 315, 411, 412, 435, 440, 455.
Biological/Physical: ANT 320, 322, 324, 326, 426, 430.
Cultural: ANT 301, 303, 304, 305, 309, 317, 387, 445.

Electives: 6 hours distributed as follows:
Any 200-, 300-, or 400- level anthropology course: 3-6 hours.
Linguistics: 0-3 hours. ANT 208; ENG 320, 322.

Students contemplating a professional career in anthropology are urged to study a foreign
language and acquire basic skills in computer science and statistics. Anthropology advisors may recommend additional courses in the sciences, humanities, or mathematics commensurate with individual career plans.

A “C” (2.00) grade point average or better is required among all courses used to satisfy the
anthropology major and a “C” grade or better is required in each required anthropology course counted toward the major.


Requirements for a Minor in Anthropology: 21 hours. ANT 206, 207, 210, and 12 additional
hours at least 6 of which are at the 300-400 level. ANTL 207 may be taken as an elective but
is not required. In selecting the courses to fulfill the minor requirements, students are strongly
encouraged to consult with the anthropology faculty.

A “C” (2.00) grade point average is required among anthropology courses used to satisfy the
above requirements.

 

Minor in Anthropology

Requirements include a minimum of 21 credit hours--9 hours of basic courses: ANT 206 Cultural Anthropology, ANT 207 Archaeology, and ANT 210 Physical Anthropology; and 12 hours of electives with at least 6 of those hours at the 300-400 level (provide links to the above archaeology, cultural, and physical/biological anthropology course lists). Also add: "A minimum "C" grade point average (2.00) is required among anthropology courses selected for the minor."
