What steps do I need to take if I wish to defer my enrollment as a freshman to UNCW? 

Each year there are some admitted students who want to defer their enrollment for a variety of reasons.  Some want to take time off after high school for personal or family medical issues, to travel abroad, complete military service, internship opportunities, or perhaps work to contribute financially to the cost of attending college.  Whatever the reasons are, students must:

 

1. Write a letter to the Director of Admissions Jan Rockwell, at the address below requesting permission to defer enrollment for one full year, clearly stating the reason(s) for the request.  Requests must be received by June 1 before the fall semester for which you applied to attend.
2. Understand that the admission application fee and deposits that were already paid for enrollment, housing and orientation are not refundable, even when a deferral request is granted.
3. Wait for a response from Mrs. Rockwell before committing to other plans, as requests to defer admission are not automatic.
4. Students must submit a full, final and official high school transcript immediately after high school graduation and before the start of a deferred year.   
5. Understand that any financial aid and scholarship awards do not carry over to the following year.  Students must reapply for financial aid.
6. Students must update & submit the campus safety issue questions before January 15th (see admissions forms).
7. Students are not permitted to enroll in any other degree seeking course of study at another institution during this time. However, UNCW will ONLY give credit for up to 8 hours earned.
8. During the deferral year, students will need to contact the Office of Admissions by January 15, to confirm their intent to enroll.  At that time, deposits for enrollment, housing and orientation should be paid to the appropriate offices.*

*First Year Spring Admit (FYSA) students may request a one academic year deferal using the same steps as above, however, the date by which FYSA students must notify admission of their continued intent to enroll is August 1.
