Researcher Leads Efforts to Understand PFAS Effects
North Carolina’s water systems are threatened by PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” due to their persistence. In response, the state has established the NC PFAS Testing Network at UNCW's Center for Marine Science.

Blue Economy Index Blends Academics, Science, Business
UNCW has introduced the Blue Economy Index, a pioneering stock index that tracks the economic activities of oceans and waterways, emphasizing high environmental, social, and governance scores. Takeem Dennis '24, a music education major and former Marine, discovered his passion for music in the fifth grade. He sees attending UNCW as a crucial step toward realizing his dream of becoming a teacher.
Natalie Tidler '24M has always been passionate about education. Her experiences at UNCW, with its supportive faculty and practical fieldwork, deepened her love for teaching. Now, she's ready to inspire her future students.
After earning her bachelor's degree in India, Sana '24M was eager to explore new opportunities. Driven by her aspiration to study in the United States, she chose UNCW to pursue her master’s degree in data science.

A project aimed at mitigating floodwater issues at the Battleship North Carolina site involves monitoring the challenging marsh environment. UNCW's Coastal and Estuarine Studies Lab is tracking physical and biological changes to address significant increases in flooding at the historic site.
Excavating Evidence of Early Agricultural Engineering
With the use of a side-scan sonar and positioning systems, researchers are searching for archaeological evidence of the rice fields once situated along the lower Cape Fear and Brunswick rivers’ banks.
UNCW researchers and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management are studying Frying Pan Shoals as a possible offshore sand source. The university will receive $2 million in funding for the four-year collaborative research project.
