UNCW Board of Trustees Elects Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary for 2014-15

The UNCW Board of Trustees elected a new chair and vice chair and re-elected the secretary for the 2014-15 academic year, the University announced today. Each officer has strong family and community connections to UNCW. The elections were held during the board’s Aug. 22 meeting in Chapel Hill.
The chair is Kinston resident Michael Shivar, who previously served as chair of the External Affairs Committee and member of the Educational Planning and Programs Committee and the Executive Committee. He is a former member of the UNCW Board of Visitors. Shivar, owner of Kinston Insurance Service Agency, and his wife Jackie established a creative writing scholarship endowment at UNCW named for their daughter Ashley ’07, ’10, who holds degrees in creative writing.
“I am honored to serve as chair of the UNCW Board of Trustees,” Shivar said. “The university is among the best in our region, and I’m proud to be the parent of a graduate. I look forward to supporting faculty and staff as they advance UNCW’s mission to educate students, conduct research, pursue innovation and improve the quality of life in Southeastern North Carolina.”
The vice chair is H. Carlton Fisher ’83 of Wilmington, former chair of the Business Affairs Committee. He is also a former member and chair of the UNCW Foundation Board and served as emcee for the Campaign for UNCW: Soaring to Greatness launch celebration in 2011. Fisher owns and manages Coastal Realty, a Wilmington commercial realty founded by his father. His parents, Herb and Sylvia Fisher, attended Wilmington College and are major university supporters. He and his wife Julie Elkins Fisher ’83, have a son Mason, who is a junior at UNCW, and a daughter Anna, a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill.
Wilmington resident Wilma W. Daniels was re-elected as secretary of the board. She is a member of the Business Affairs Committee, the Educational Planning and Programs Committee and the Executive Committee. Founder and CEO of Daniels Development, LLC, she also is the founder of and property manager for William Hooper Apartments and an active community leader. She supports the Windell Daniels Public Housing & Section 8 Memorial Scholarship Endowment, created in memory of her late husband, who also served on the Board of Trustees. Her son Euran S. Daniels funded a scholarship endowment at UNCW and serves on the Board of Visitors.
