Dr. Justine Reel serves as the Interim Associate Provost for Research and Innovation at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). In this role, she is the chief research officer and leads the campus research and innovation enterprise. She also serves as the President of the UNCW Research Foundation.
In 2014, Dr. Reel joined the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) as a professor of exercise science in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences and as the inaugural Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in CHHS. Dr. Reel brings over 19 years of administrative experience, including previous interim appointments as CHHS Dean and Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance (SPARC) Director. Prior to UNCW, she was faculty at University of Utah and served in the roles of Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Chair, and Center Director.
Dr. Reel’s research is focused on body image, eating disorders, intuitive exercise, and healthy lifestyle education. This work has produced more than 100 peer reviewed journal publications and over 100 national and international presentations. Dr. Reel is also the author of nine books, with a 10th in press, and the contributor of 22 book chapters. As a Lead Principal Investigator (PI), she has secured more than $2.3 million in extramurally sponsored funding. She currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology and Co-Chair of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology’s Eating Disorders Special Interest Group. She has graduated 24 master’s students and eight doctoral students.
Dr. Reel holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Exercise and Sport Science (Sport and Exercise Psychology) and an M.S. in Counselor Education (Community Counseling) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Associate Provost Stuart Borrett
Dr. Borrett is serving as a program director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities for the Growing Research Access for Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity (GRANTED) program. While on this appointment for the 2024-25 academic year, Dr. Borrett is stationed at the NSF headquarters in Virginia.
Dr. Borrett joined UNCW in 2007 and is a professor in the Department of Biology and Marine Biology. He has served as associate provost for Research and Innovation since 2018. As a systems ecologist, his research is focused on discovering the processes that create, constrain, and sustain ecological systems.
